Mental Skills Coaching Sessions

I work with elite high school, college and professional athletes via phone, zoom, or in person. My goal is to build a relationship with the athlete to find out what is preventing the athlete from performing up to their potential and then develop a program to address those needs.

Speaking Engagements

As a guest speaker, I use my baseball experiences and mental skills training to tailor my message to fit the needs of my client. My client list includes: New Hampton School, The Pingree School, Mohegan Sun World Baseball Convention, Lincoln Financial, Patterson Dental Group, and Novo Nordisk.

Control the inner voice

That voice we hear in our heads, often times, is the biggest opponent we battle during competition. That voice directs our actions, both good and not so good. I call this negative voice, the “little man.” It uses terms like; “can’t”, “don’t”, and “gotta”. This destructive voice also creates a fear of failure which leads to images of failure. I will help you control the “little man” so you can compete against the opponent on the field, not the one in your head.

Implement imagery practice

Imagery is a skill used by world class athletes to help improve performance in a variety of sports. Games can be won and lost before the first pitch is thrown, so why not utilize this powerful mental skill to help you perform successfully even before you step on the field?  I will help you develop an imagery program which will enhance and improve several aspects of your performance.

Teach relaxation

Many game situations are stressful and can increase the tension felt by athletes. I will help you learn how use proper breathing techniques before and during competition which will help you perform calmly while under pressure.

Develop proper goals and expectations

Developing proper goals and having realistic expectations is vital to long term success. If athletes don’t have them they can become frustrated and lose motivation. I will help you develop proper goals and expectations which will improve confidence and motivation.

Establish routines

Successful athletes have learned to establish pre-game, in-game and post-game routines. Consistent routines lead to consistent success. I will help you develop and maintain effective and practical routines which will improve your performance.

Ultimate performance

By working on the areas listed above you will seal up any “mental cracks” you may presently have in your game. Developing a mental game plan will lead to more consistent performances by giving you the tools and techniques to overcome any internal or external challenge or obstacle you face.

Tap into your true potential

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“On our way back to IL from ATL we listened to 90%. I saw Will pull out his phone and start taking notes. He then began to hit the pause button to finish his note as not to miss anything that was to come. I asked him what were some things that he got from his first run with this book. He said the “Little Man”, the “Stop Sign”, “Breathe”, and “Anchor Statements; specifically the Boat & Anchor analogy”. Mr. Tewks is doing incredible work and I saw it with my son Will. It has been the single best development piece of Will’s 14U season.”

“Tewks talked about different things as far as the mental side of the game, and building that relationship with him I had a trust where I could go and bounce things off of him. He’s a no BS guy. I knew he wouldn’t pussyfoot around with me. I knew if I asked him a question, he would give me an honest answer, both on the pitching side and on the mental side. I knew I would get that from him.”

“He tells you what he sees, and he calls you out on things. He makes you better as a player as you go along. The biggest thing I’ve found is that if a player continues to seek advice, seek help, there are people who can help that player get the most out of his potential on the baseball field.”

“I’ve worked with other people, but the stuff we put in place in Boston is what I’m still using today,” Miller says. “It’s a very important part of my success, or turnaround. It’s something I take very seriously and I think it’s had a big impact on my pitching.”

“Having worked with Tewks as a player as well as a coach, I’ve been lucky enough to see firsthand how much he can impact individuals and teams.  He has been invaluable to me personally throughout my career, as well as our baseball team at Boston College.”

Inviting Bob to Novo Nordisk to share his unique perspective on building and utilizing mental skills to deal with failure, pressure, negativity and anxiety was a great fit for our group. His techniques and skills are applicable in any field or walk of life for which my group is better for after spending a day with Bob. I highly recommend Bob if you are looking for a presenter to inspire and teach your group.
